The Methods Used to Prevent Acid Reflux

If you suffer from acid reflux, you know how painful and uncomfortable this condition can be. However, there after several steps you can take to prevent acid reflux symptoms. First, it is important to understand the foods that cause your acid reflux to flare up. Certain foods and drinks cause a spike in stomach acid, making it more likely that you will experience discomfort. To prevent acid reflux symptoms, avoid carbonated and acidic drinks like beer, soda and wine. Also, avoid foods that are fried, fatty, or contain caffeine, chocolate or citrus.
Most people experience the worst acid reflux at night as they lay in bed. To prevent acid reflux at night, avoid eating too close to bedtime. If you still experience symptoms, try using more pillows to sit up in bed. This can discourage acid from rising into the esophagus. Some people can also prevent acid reflux by laying on one side or the other while in bed. Most people find that laying on their right side can prevent acid reflux from causing them discomfort during the night.
If you suspect that there is a particular food that causes your acid reflux to flare up, trying cutting that food out of your diet. Some foods can cause acid reflux symptoms in certain people, while causing no problems for others. Experiment with your diet and see if adding or cutting out any one particular food has an affect or can prevent acid reflux discomfort altogether.
If your symptoms are serious enough, your doctor may recommend that you try an over-the-counter medication. This may be your only option if you have explored all other options in an attempt to prevent acid reflux.
Severe symptoms can also be a sign of a serious disease, know as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD. GERD may require surgery or prescription medication. One such procedure, known as EndoCinch, corrects the initial problem that causes Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). In this type of surgery used to prevent acid reflux, a medical machine is used to reinforce the already weak sphincter. This creates a type of barrier, eliminating the ability of the stomach acid to be regurgitated, thereby serving to prevent acid reflux. Talk to your doctor if you experience painful heartburn, trouble swallowing, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, a sensation of a lump in your throat, or chest pain. However, if you experience severe chest pain coupled with shortness of breath or jaw or arm pain, you should get immediate medical attention as this could indicate the occurrence of a heart attack.
You should treat your acid reflux symptoms seriously. Untreated acid reflux could eventually damage the lining of the esophagus and can lead to serious problems, including ulcers and even cancer.
