Home Security Basics

Home security is on everyone's minds these days. Who wouldn't be worried with the rash of home invasions, burglaries and vandalism that has become epidemic across the country? Perhaps this is the time to seriously consider the added layer of protection that a home security system provides you and your family. Statistics show that homes with monitored home security systems are three times safer than those without. However, home security experts strongly recommend that home owners take additional precautions to transform their residences into less attractive targets. Home owners must never, ever leave their homes unlocked when unattended. Home security is jeopardized even in the few minutes it takes to run an errand around the corner. The days of unlocked doors are long gone. Be unpredictable. Vary the times you leave for and return home from work. Potential burglars look for reliable behavior patterns. They also look for spare keys. Keep yours well hidden and out of anyone's line of vision. Caution your children to keep your hiding place a secret. Another item to keep out of sight is the garbage can. Identity thieves love pawing through garbage for old utility bills, check stubs, anything that contains specific identifying information. Believe it or not, home security extends to the area around the outside of the house. Continuing on this theme, you would be wise to illuminate the exterior of your home with motion sensor lights. Garages, sheds, entranceways, any darkened nooks and crannies need light to deter thieves from attempting a break in. Home security depends on visibility and exposure of the thief's actions. Home security experts also recommend that blinds and curtains be left closed to conceal televisions, computers, electronics systems and other easily transportable items of value. Keep garage doors closed, and locked, to protect lawn mowers, bicycles and snowblowers. What about home security when you are away on vacation? Don't advertise your absence. Ask neighbors or friends to pick up mail and newspapers on a daily basis and put your trash out on collection day. Put your electronics on timers, leave drapes slightly open and let the neighbors park their car in your driveway.
